Mike's Tavern / Lightning jolt!
« Last post by vu2nan on February 15, 2022, 05:24:23 UTC »
It was a typical summer afternoon in the year 1977.

I was working CW on 40m - my homebrew EL84 rig feeding a straight dipole antenna with telephone drop wire as feeder.

Meanwhile the sky became overcast and there was a continuous rumble as I continued to work.

All of a sudden I received a jolt through my Junker key followed by the crash of a thunderbolt.

Without a thought I yanked the feeder off its sockets and threw it on the floor. My heart missed a beat when I saw the arc that followed between the banana plugs and the cement concrete floor.

The following morning's local newspaper headline was 'Lightning stuns football players'. It was a direct hit at the nearby football field. Fortunately only a couple of the players had fainted and there were no casualties.

I got an email prompting me to revist this forum.  Thanks to the admin person for the nudge.

I worked a person in southeast asia on just a few hundred milliwatts several years ago.  What a thrill!

My main interest is improving my conversational CW skills and getting some antennas up: an off-center fed inverted vee for 6 through 80 meters and a magnetic loop.

I have several QRP watt meters languishing on the shelf, and I hope to start using them soon.

Antennas / Comet CST-30 Antenna Connector Mounting Bracket
« Last post by ve2th on February 15, 2022, 02:05:56 UTC »
Hello, Mike VE2TH here,

A new product from Comet antennas, called: Comet CST-30 Antenna Connector Mounting Bracket.-

Very useful for Yaesu FT-817/818ND or the Icom IC-705.

With Yaesu it gives you the opportunity to have one antenna for the VHF bands if , sometimes you want to listen to FM Broadcast, for some news, or get in touch with a friend on 2 meter or 70 CM, or to listen to aircraft band, etc.

Photo available on DX ENGINEERING  here:

https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/cma-cst-30/media/images

I have one on my FT-818ND along with a diamond SRH77CA dual band. While you can switch via the menu ( front antenna of back antenna) so this way you have access to HF with your antenna at the back and this small vertical plug in front.

You can give your antenna an angle of minus or plus 30 degrees, if your transceiver is installed on a support  for a better viewing of the display and control.

Try it,you will love it,

Hello to the old and new amateurs on this nice forum.  ;D

Yes I'm back on this one, and I'm very happy this forum is coming back to life.

Been hamming since the beginning of 1964, 58 years of great fun, always runnning QRP.
Right now I'm using an FT-818ND. For the last 20 years I used the first version and second one FT-817, the FT-817ND, and now the FT-818ND. I love this one very much for plenty of reasons, which I can elaborate in another post.

I work mostly about 90% CW and some phone mode like SSB/AM/FM.

Right now, you can read some I wrote in this forum. So if you have any questions, feel free to ask, it should be a pleasure to answer these.

See you on the air, now the new solar cycle 25 is going up.

72/73, Mike VE2TH   The QR'per for 58 years.  ;D

I have an HW-8 for sale.  It's in excellent condition...9.5/10.  Worked as it should last year but has not been used since.  I seem to have misplaced the DC cord.  Why is your call sign not showing up on QRZ lookup???

Salutations,

73 Michel VE2TH  QR'piste depuis 58 ans maintnant.-
