Title: Hello from WB3CFN/QRP Mobile
Post by: WB3CFN on June 30, 2014, 00:44:03 UTC
Hi,
I've operated my FT-817ND mobile for about 8 years now. Despite using a 4 magnet mag-mount into an old Diamond antenna, I've had some success with Euro DX from Pennsylvania. I would LOVE to update my antenna but I would like to hear from other QRP Mobile ops, to learn what kind of HF antenna works for you.
"Some day..." I'll learn to work CW mobile though a manual shift car makes it tougher. HiHi! For now, I'm on 20m SSB and, occasionally, 40m.
73!

Welcome Joe!  I can see where a manual transmission and mobile CW could be...challenging.  :D  Hope you have a good time here!

Thanks, Will!
Mobile SSB w/stickshift has it's issues as well! When Germany hosted the World Cup Soccer games a few years ago, I was making a left turn from at a light that turned green as their op returned my call. It was the ugliest left turn I've ever made but my signal was a 5x7 and his was a 5x9. He was quite surprised I was QRP. The '817's internal battery died about 5 minutes later, shutting down the rig.
In His service and yours,
Joe
