I want to reply. I had several 817 rigs over the years. Unfortunately my eyesight has aged and the mini display is no longer  easily legible. I would ask why why why didn't Yaesu manufacture  and offer an outboard LARGER display attachment that could be plugged into a new 818...something like their 857 and 897. Good eyesight, don't buy it. Aging eyesight buy and use it. Maybe leave it home if you can manage sans when outdoors. Under those condx I would purchase an 818.
