Hi gang.....AA2JZ here...Carl, been ham since 1958   was KN2UZF, then WB2HZI, and now AA2JZ....enjoy building QRP gear from scratch using the Manhattan style of building....works for me ! Age is 71, so sometimes Im a bit slower than usual...CW is my favorite mode, but sometimes I work digital.....phone..almost never...just to say hello....

 I particularly like the NW8010 versions for scratch built.....It is easy to build, but then I also have been building for some time.
I would advise starting with something along the W1FB simple DC RX for 40 meters or the like. Not many parts, cheap to assemble and a good learning project. There are lots of designs on the web for a device like this...

I build using Manhattan construction (see photo) Each connection is made to a pad super glued on a base of board stock. The size I use for the case is/are old AB Switches, found at flea markets//// The pads are made using a "nibbler" for working with sheet metal. Radio Shack did have them but Im not sure anymore. The pads I make are about 1/16 x 3/16 inches. Sounds small, but construction goes fast.

Try building an LM386 audio amp on a small piece of stock first to see how it goes......expand from there when your happy
