A quick update, 2 great evenings on 20 meters! It has been years ago since I heard so many stations from South-America! The band opens around 19z. There really is an advantage to living in Sicily...  ;D Stations from Brazil can get very loud. But I also heard CE, YV and LU. Signals from North-America are weaker.

I made three 2-way QRP contacts, with G4EDG, IT9QAU and UY1IF. No DX QSO's... All with a 20 meter groundplane and 2 radials.

I might have a go at 40 today and put up a groundplane for that band. The end-fed takes up to much space  :)

I must confess, travelling and operating a radio station does not go very well together. I can hardly find the time to unpack all the radio equipment and put up an antenna unless we stay at one place for a couple of days...

We have arrived in Sicily on may 1st. On the North coast, near Milazzo I have done some listening on 20 meters. Signals from the middle East are much stronger then at home I noticed.

We are now at the South coast, near Menfi. The Reverse Beacon Network picks up my signal okay, but at fairly low levels. Hope to make some contacts here.

Antennas / Re: Updating my antennas...sort of
« Last post by VE2TH on April 28, 2018, 00:47:00 UTC »
Well, now the nice weather and warmer days are back here,

I have again some antennas projects.

1- EFHW = End Fed Half Wave Antenna I shall begin with a monoband, propbly for 17 meters,  and I have the idea to have another one for 40-20-15-10 meters

2- VDA = Vertical Dipole Array  Check this one:

This 2 elements is sure very interesting, with a bit of gain to push my  peanut whistle signal a bit further  ;D

So some fresh air and experimentation should be a lot of fun.

Mike's Tavern / Re: QSLs can be hard work!

Hello Dave,

WOW!! 150 QSL's from the bureau, you are very Lucky, I never got that in 55 years of ham radio.
The most I have had in a year, it is around 40 to 50 paper QSL via the bureau, and a few direct, and it was my best year.-It is usually much less than that.

Since the new world wide system of grid squares in 1983, I activated 72 different grids over the years since then. But QSL'ing is very low. It seems, at least for me, that the QSL'ing system is less popular.

Percentage return of QSL, for me:

LOTW = 21%,  E-QSL 34% (much better), PAPER QSL = 9%, TOTAL: 64% for the 3 qsl'ing systems.
not bad anyway.-

---------------------------------------------------

Concerning  the log, it is the same here, when portable I use paper log, and once at home I put them in the computer. I agree with you, Yes it is good to read nice comments on the old paper QSL which is not the case with LOTW & E-QSL.

Anyway, I'm looking to better propagation Hi!  ;D

72, Michel

Transceivers / Re: NEW FT-818ND, A rumor or a Joke ?
« Last post by VE2TH on April 28, 2018, 00:18:58 UTC »
Hi! all,

Well, it is not a joke nor a Rumor, it is officially on sale in major ham radio store, such as Radio World in Toronto Canada.-

It is a real keeper and the most complete transceiver on the market. I work the world with it for 18 years now, with no issues.

But, it would have been  fun to find in that new one, a roofing filter like the one into the KX3 from Elecraft and the automatic antenna tuner 10:1.

Probably in a ral new model in the future ?

73 to all

I am now at Lago di Trasimeno near the town of Passignano, callsign I0/PG4I/P. I have spent some time on 40 yesterday, propagation picks up at around 17.00 GMT due to atmospheric absorption, which is about 2 hours later compared to Northern Italy. Did not expect that and it might get worse the more south we get..

Stations from Germany are the strongest here and it is mostly north/south contacts I hear. I would have expected more stations from across the Adriatic sea but I hear more stations from Spain. We will move to the west coast in a couple of days, let's see what that gives...

Propagation on 20 is still very bad  :-\

Sunspot numbers are going up! Heard a lot of Brazilians yesterday afternoon on 15 meters CW. Hope you make a lot of contacts!

I'll be QRV from the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides (the most westerly inhabited island in EU) from Monday 23 April to Saturday 5 May. 20m and 30m with a trapped GP on a 12m pole.

 ;D It's a Tenson shirt Dave...

I might be staying in SV8 in a couple of weeks, one of your hangouts. Either on Corfu or Lefkada.
