welcome to the club Craig. I'm VE4AKI and live in Winnipeg. I have been a ham for 34years and work mostly cw/qrp. You will find me monitoring 14060 a lot of the time so maybe we can have a qso. Hope to hear you-----Tom

...I decided to start with the uBITX (http://www.hfsignals.com)...a build that's not a real build...an assembly let's say...but intriguing...

...and I believe that soon I will go with the LNR LD-11

...and start working through some other kits...whittling them down

...also it makes a lot more sense to me to start with the cw qrp rigs and add this amp - (https://www.wimo.com/amplifier-hf-transistor_e.html#HLA150-PLUS) than to buy a full power rig  which already has too many accessories and have to dial it down...

...seems like a thoroughly European thing to do, hey?

;)

...any thoughts or comments?

Michel,

I will look all of those up.  And thank you for your time in responding.  As spring approaches I am able to get outside and take some reading on antenna lengths, tower height, obstructions, etc..  There's a lot to work through which for me starts with visualizing.  Thanks also for emailing me the PDF's of the books that you have...

Later!

Good evening Craig,

Concerning the QUAD ANTENNA, I forgot to tell you of 2 "very good & instructive books" plus another Document from TEN-TEN Club.

1- QUAD ANTENNA VOL: 1 CUBICVAL QUAD NOTES, 188 PAGES
A REVIEW OF EXISTING DESIGNS
BY: L,B, CEBIK W4-RNL (SK)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2- CUBICAL QUAD NOTES VOL: 2, 231 PAGES

 RETHINKING THE QUAD BEAM
BY: L.B CEBIK, W4RNL (SK)

3- This one come from TEN-TEN CLUB of California,

    Title: AN-TEN-TEN-NAS BY: L.B. CEBIK, W4RNL (SK)Ten-Ten no: 41159,

This 216 pages document contains 58 different articles concerning antennas and related subject

about ten meter antennas, very interesting.-

May be I have it here in my .PDF Antennas Document.

Hello again Craig,

Well if I had a farm like this, it is sure I would like to install some fixed Wire Beam or fixed wire delta loops in Quad configuration. (TRIANGLE). with the wood poles you have it would be a lot of fun!!!

Two books came to my mind:

From ED M. NOLL, W3FQJ who is now Silent Key.

Book 1: 73 DIPOLE AND LONG WIRE ANTENNAS, 150 PAGES.

Book 2: 73 VERTICAL AND BEAM ANTENNAS, 161 PAGES

In those books only one thing is missing, is How to match these antennas?

Sure it is with some baluns, or antenna tuner, manual or automatic, or antomatic remote, etc..

As you may know, in those books you will find some wire antennas with great gain, but also with some high impedance.

Another set of real good books, well explained, are those from R.L. CEBIK W4RNL, but there are hard to find.

If it can help you those bookd are highly recommended.

See you,

72/73, Michel VE2TH

Hello Craig,

Yes you can add the Elecraft, the new KX2 2016/2017,  and since 2012 the KX3 which is more popular, and with more features.

Also the Icom IC-703 + 0 thru 10 watts out  (discontinued) but sometimes avalaible on EBAY or some flea markets.

The plus model has 6 meters along with HF, and it is the second version. It has a built-in antenna tuner exactly the same as the one in the elecraft it is a 10:1.

Here I<m using the FT-817ND and the Icom IC-703 Plus for nearly 10 years now. plus the Elecraft KX3 which belong to my XYL VE2RH, who like to pound the brass (CW)

We loved both 3 of them, and have lot of fun operating portable and at home as well.

Let us know of your choice, it is not easy, and it needs a good study and comparaisons before buying.

Good afternoon Craig,

Welcome to this QRP Club, sure you should like it, as we are a bunch of QRP'er with the emphase to do more with less.

I'm also a QRP fan for 55 years now and always love it, and I always find something new in this particular world of QRP & QRPp ( milliwatt)

See you on the bands around the QRP frequencies.

Thanks Dave...

...I'd rather not add remote switching...I am an outdoor person so don't mind doing the legwork, even at -30 ;)

...and there's just something about keeping my setup as simple as possible that I find as attractive as low power transmission itself...I've been a ham 30 years and I'll go to my grave still fascinated that I can talk to the world on the same power as a low wattage lightbulb!  More gadgets, more electronics, and more power only have gotten me into more trouble! ;)

I will have to ask at some point about simple antennas as I access remote backcountry here, usually marshy or rocky and in some places with no trees...but that's for another thread

It has been many years since I looked at dedicated QRP rigs.  I was favourably impressed by the reading i did on this thread:

http://www.qrpclub.org/qrp/index.php?topic=245.0

I made a list of the rigs found there in order to help me work through them on-by-one:

ATS-3B
Bitx20
Elad FDM Duo
Elecraft K1
Elecraft T1
FT-817ND
Heathkit HW-7
Heathkit HW-8
KX3
Kenwood TS120V
Kenwood TR-751E
LNR Mantiz fx2
LNR MTN
MFJ Cub
Rockmite20
Shiizu Denshi SS-105S
Ten-Tec Argosy
TS 130V
X1M Pro Platimum
Youkit H1- B1
Youkit HB-1B
VS1AA
Yv5IUA

...perhaps I missed some?

If there are other QRP rigs not listed then you may add them so that I can fill out my list.

Thanks for all your help!  Perhaps others may benefit as well...
