Antennas / Updating my antennas...sort of
« Last post by ve3vvf on March 19, 2018, 15:09:04 UTC »
2 years ago I moved to a place with 2 acres surrounded by farm fields.   The wind has been playing on my inverted vee antennas...especially in winter.  The tangling that occurs with the fan dipole style of antenna is disappointing extremely.  I have 2 dual band fan dipoles.  I need a better solution and I believe I may have found it.  I read an article in the ARRL Wire Antenna book that I bought from Amazon last fall.  The antenna from the article I read has the radiating elements made from ladder line/window line.  I can make a 2-band dipole that will not get tangled because the wires are evenly spaced/separated by the permanent windows.  It is still an experiment, of course, but I know they won't get all wrapped around themselves.  Here is a picture of how it is made.  Maybe someone else here has done this.  If so I'd like to know the results.  Still too cold here for antenna work but soon.

Hi Michel! Interesting links you posted. I doubt if 817 owners will be rushing to 'upgrade' as there doesn't appear to be a great deal to gain over the current 817s.
I enjoyed my 817 when I had one, but found the cw filtering too wide on busy bands. It was a very good all bands radio though.

Telegraphy / latest addition to key collection
« Last post by VE4AKI on March 09, 2018, 16:37:56 UTC »
I just thought I would post another addition to my key collection. It's a Nye Viking Speed-X model 320-003 made in the early 70's. I got if for a very reasonable price and after a bit of cleaning and polishing it shows very well. After a bit of adjustment I found it has a very solid feel. Thanks for looking-----------Tom

...I decided to start with the uBITX (http://www.hfsignals.com)...a build that's not a real build...an assembly let's say...but intriguing...

...and I believe that soon I will go with the LNR LD-11

...and start working through some other kits...whittling them down

...also it makes a lot more sense to me to start with the cw qrp rigs and add this amp - (https://www.wimo.com/amplifier-hf-transistor_e.html#HLA150-PLUS) than to buy a full power rig  which already has too many accessories and have to dial it down...

...seems like a thoroughly European thing to do, hey?

;)

...any thoughts or comments?

Michel,

I will look all of those up.  And thank you for your time in responding.  As spring approaches I am able to get outside and take some reading on antenna lengths, tower height, obstructions, etc..  There's a lot to work through which for me starts with visualizing.  Thanks also for emailing me the PDF's of the books that you have...

Later!
